Ever since the initial days there has been a cat-and-mouse game between Apple and iPhone users of having the ability to unlock their beloved phones to switch service providers. It’s such a big deal that some hackers devote tons of hours to it, some groups make SIM interposer unlocks, some won’t upgrade their firmware for months and years, and some people get so fed up with it they just by a factory unlocked iPhone!

There is such a overwhelmingly large demand for unlocked iPhones that college kids and repair shops make serious money buying, fixing and unlocking iPhones. Just check your local craigslist. It now appears that AT&T will help out this trend by unlocking your old iPhones. They announced a couple days ago that they would begin doing it as early as Sunday. (When I first heard this I thought it was crazy, I just can’t wrap my head around the idea as to why AT&T would want to make it possible for other people to use T-Mobile)

So if you have an old iPhone and want to unlock it for whatever reason than here’s how to do it.

Step 1: On your iPhone, open Settings > General > About, and note down you IMEI number.

Step 2: Log into AT&T’s website, and proceed to AT&T’s WirelessSupport Chat.

Step 3: Give them your IMEI (Step 1)

Step 4: Within 72 hours, you’ll be sent an e-mail notification stating your unlock is ready.

Step 5: Finally, you’ll need to follow the remaining instructions in the e-mail, which consist of syncing and restoring to complete the process.

And Kaboom, your iPhone is pretty much as good as factory unlocked. Now you can take it with you internationally, or sell it on CL or eBay. Whivhever you prefer.
