What is Jailbreaking?

Jailbreaking is running an application that allows you to bypass Apple’s security and gives you the ability to access the root folder. By being able to do this you can modify any and every file you’d like as well as have the ability to run unsigned code. Meaning that you are no longer restricted to only what is given to you through the App Store. I imagine the App Store is jail, and there are tons of tools to help you break free from it.

Nowadays Jailbreaking adds unofficial third-party app-stores so to speak, to your iOS device, such as Cydia. Cydia will let you download many 3rd-party applications, tweaks, themes and extensions that are unavailable and often times rejected by Apple through the App Store. These packages most commonly referred to as tweaks and themes open up endless possibilities to do things on your iOS device that you wouldn’t be able to do without a Jailbroken device.

With Jailbreaking just about anything is possible via your iPhone. You can completely customize it to your liking. From  how you interact with it, how it looks and much much more. You can install extensions that give you instant access to your system settings from anywhere on your iOS device, bypass certain restrictions set in place by Apple and the carriers, and find packages that give you more control over your iOS experience.

Jailbreaking is really all about making the user experience on iOS better. That’s it, it’s not about Piracy or hacking, it’s about making a great device even better.  It’s about releasing your iOS device from Apple’s shackles to let you install anything you want. Just like you would modify a car!

What’s the point of Jailbreaking?

The main reason is to install third party applications including tweaks, themes and add-ons that Apple doesn’t provide and or wouldn’t allow their App Store. Apple often doesn’t approve some amazing Apps. So those developers come to Cydia to host their Apps and sell them. Did you know that jailbreak developers created many of the features you use on your phone. Here’s a few concepts taken from Jailbreaking going way, way back. Changing your ringtone, recording video, multitasking, internet tethering, downloading big files over 3G, FaceTime on 3G. The list goes on for days…

Apple doesn’t allow you to customize your iPhone by changing app icons or the general user interface of your device. Thanks to the jailbreak community, there are several ways to completely change the way your iPhone looks, with dozens of developers creating amazing themes for icons, wallpapers and just about anything you can think of to customize the look of your iDevice.

Besides applications, jailbreaking also gives you access to tweaks, mods, and extensions. These not exactly considered applications. They bring subtle improvements to the way your iOS device operates. For example, Double @@  is a tweak that lets you double tap the @@ button and will automatically insert what ever you want right there. Unbelievably helpful for entering long passwords. If you think that’s cool, you haven’t seen anything yet.

Jailbreaking will allow you to unlock your iPhone to be used with a different carrier. A lot of people think this is Jailbreaking. It’s wrong, Jailbreaking is the first step in unlocking your iPhone. For for information on unlocking, visit or dedicated unlock page.

Isn’t Jailbreaking and Unlocking the same thing?

No, jailbreaking and unlocking are two different things. To unlock your iPhone, you usually have to jailbreak first. Jailbreaking an iPhone lets you install third party applications and mods, the ability to unlock is one of those things you can do after Jailbreaking.

Unlocking is the ability to Unlock the iPhone’s baseband to be used on any provider. For example many American users want to unlock their AT&T iPhone’s to be used on T-Mobile’s network.

Is Jailbreaking Legal?

Jailbreaking is completely legal, at least here in the US. For a long time, jailbreaking was considered illegal by the US government based on copyright litigation. In July of 2010, the US government passed a rule that made jailbreaking legal. The argument was that it was like modifying your car. I loved this argument!

There is nothing to worry about. No one ever has been sued by Apple because they Jailbroke their iPhone, iPad, iPod or AppleTV, and it’s been going on since 2007!

Will Jailbreaking my iPhone void my warranty?

Ahhh this question is great. It’s great because yes it does void it. If you show you jailbroken iDevice to an Apple employee your going to be SOL because that will be their default answer. Sorry we can no longer give you customer support now that your Jailbroken.

Here’s Apple’s stance…

From Apple’s support article on jailbreaking:

“Apple strongly cautions against installing any software that hacks the iOS. It is also important to note that unauthorized modification of the iOS is a violation of the iPhone end-user license agreement and because of this, Apple may deny service for an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch that has installed any unauthorized software.”

However don’t let that scare you. First, all you need to do is restore your iDevice. Boom problem solved. There is absolutely no way Apple can look at your restored iPhone and say oh that was Jailbroken. They won’t ever know. I’ve done this dozens of times.

Can I Brick My iPhone if I Jailbreak?

There may be stories on the vast world wide web of bricked iDevices. This might have been possible before, but very very rare, but it’s impossible now. The absolute worst thing that may happen is that your device would become unresponsive, frozen, say it’s disabled for a bajillion hours or even other weird things, in which the average person would just assume the worst and think “It’s BRICKED.” But it’s not and their all pretty easy to fix. You can check out these simple steps to make sure your iDevice gets restored and move on with your life.

Can I Still Use iTunes and the App Store After Jailbreaking?

People often ask this question. Yes, you can use iTunes and the App Store after jailbreaking your device. The only thing that happens when you Jailbreak is a Brown app called Cydia gets installed on your device. Everything else will behave normally until you change that via Cydia.

What is Cydia?

Cydia is like the App Store of jailbreak applications. Just like the App Store, you can browse Cydia for apps, tweaks, and mods. Just like the App Store, you can download and install Cydia apps. Tons of tweaks, themes and apps are free, and some are paid. None will break the bank and in order to buy them you’ll need a paypal or amazon account.

Will Jailbreaking Prevent Me from Updating iOS?

If your iOS device is jailbroken and you decide to update it to the latest version of iOS, doing so will overwrite the jailbreak and restore your device to its factory settings. This might not be a big problem for most people, but it can become an issue for people who rely on unlocks and just love their jailbroken tweaks and themes too much to part from them.

Here’s what happens. Apple releases an update to an iOS. Hackers find the vulnerability to jailbreak it. Apple fixes that hole in an iOS update. People restore, Jailbreak is gone.  Jailbreaking can’t/won’t stop you from updating an iOS. But you may not want to especially since it seems like often times updates are to eliminate jailbreak exploits.

Updating your iOS would be the most damaging to people who rely on unlocks as unlocks are a lot more difficult to create and don’t come by very often.

It’s important to note that it sometimes takes a while for hackers to develop a jailbreak following an iOS update, which is why we usually recommend jailbreakers to hold off on updating when a new iOS version is made available.

Can Jailbreaking Allow Me to Get App Store Applications for Free?

Yes, but don’t do that. It’s illegal and takes away from the development of the community. You have problems with installous or pirated repo’s and whatnot you won’t find any help/sympathy here.
